7 day itinerary in Tyrol region Austria
All the information in the post is updated for summer 2023.
The Tyrol region in Austria is a classic special place full of beauty.
As you know, I do most of my trips around the world alone - some of them I do with friends from Israel or abroad, but occasionally I get to travel with none other than my mother :)
Like me, my mother caught the travel bug years ago. Since then she has been traveling the world between different places while my dad stays at home to complain.
She visited many exotic destinations such as Vietnam, India, China, Morocco, Russia, Thailand and many other destinations that I myself have never seen.
A few years ago as part of a long trip I took in Europe during summer, that included Austria, Germany and France, my mother and I joined forces.
In the next post, you are invited to read our 7 day itinerary in the Tyrol region in Austria (and a bit of Germany as well) - a trip I did with my mother.
The route we did in Tyrol is a circle that started and ended in Munich and lasted about a week, which I highly recommend doing with a car.

In my opinion, the route we did can be suitable for families with children, for loving couples, or like us - for quality time between mother and daughter :)

Day 1 - Munich, Germany
Our trip actually started in the undisputed capital of Bavaria, aka Munich.
After settling into our hotel (yes I slept in a hotel, even my mother found it hard to believe!), we set out to wander the streets of Munich to the famous points of the city.
We visited the Marienplatz which is in the heart of the city, where we saw the town hall (Neues Rathaus) - which in my opinion is one of the most special and slightly scary buildings I've seen.
The building was made in a neo-Gothic style - an architectural style that characterizes quite a few ancient buildings throughout Europe. The truth is that I have already visited Munich several times in my life, and I always stop in front of this building with my mouth open.
Another of Munich's well-known spots is Karlsplatz, where the Karlstor arch is located and the famous Karlsbrunnen fountain.
One of the famous streets of the city center is, as mentioned, Maximilianstraße, which is actually a long pedestrian street full of restaurants, shops and other spectacular buildings.
At the end of the huge square you will find the Maximilianeum, the house of the Bavarian parliament, and the park surrounding it - Maximiliansanlagen.
In addition, we visited the English Garden park (Englischer Garten) which maybe not many people know, but it is a huge and beautiful park, and is considered one of the biggest parks in the world.

Day 2 - Visiting Neuschwanstein Castle
On this day we spent a whole day in the area of Neuschwanstein Castle (Schloss Neuschwanstein) which is located right next to the border between Austria and Germany.
The history of the construction of the castle is actually very interesting, and you can read more information on the subject here.
One of the most striking facts about this castle is that it is the castle that Walt Disney, after his visit to Bavaria, took inspiration from to design the Sleeping Beauty Castle (the famous castle built in the Disneyland theme park).
Personally, it reminded me of Bowser's castle, the home of the evil turtle from the Super Mario game.
We also watched the castle from the famous observation point on the bridge, and we also actually went to walk inside it and observe the surrounding landscape.

Day 3 - Innsbruck - the capital of Tyrol region
On the fourth day we arrived in Innsbruck, the capital of Tyrol, and in my opinion also the most beautiful city in the world.
In this visit we mainly focused on attractions within the city.
We visited the Hofburg Palace, the Royal Church (Hofkirche) and the City Hall with the golden roof.
Innsbruck is a city where you can wander for hours, and that's what we did..!
We walked around the old city between the bridges that cross the river Inn, and among the many restaurants and shops that decorate the city.

Day 4 - Hiking to Krimml Falls
Two full days of nature, just the way I like it :)
Even the drive to the Krimml Falls (Krimmler Wasserfälle) area is so beautiful, that an integral part of the memories of this trip is the road to the places.
At Krimml Falls we did an easy hiking route (suitable for older people and families, and we even had an 80-year-old lady with us who did the route).
The Krimml Falls are considered the largest waterfalls in Europe.
If you have difficulty walking a lot, you can reach one lower tiers of the falls. You can reach the area at the foot of the falls by walking for about fifteen minutes.
If you want a bit more of a challenge, you can go up to the observation point of the falls, which involves about 1,070 meters of elevation gain.
Or if you are a hiking fiend can climb to the highest point of the falls which requires 1,470 meters of elevation gain and takes about an hour and a half to go up.
The whole area is green and pastoral and walking in it is amazing in its beauty.
Day 5 - Grossglockner Mountain
The next day we continued to the Grossglockner mountain, which is considered the highest mountain in Austria and rises to an altitude of 3,798 meters.
Even though we were there at the end of July, it was snowing at the observation point we reached :)
We had fun sitting in the restaurant of the observation point and warming up with good soup and hot tea and watching the surrounding landscape.
Of course, you can do additional hiking trails in the area of the mountain that we didn't do (this is a trip with mom).

After visiting the mountain we stopped in a small town called Zell am See located on the shore of the beautiful lake Zeller See.
You can enjoy its small streets, the lake shore, or indulge in coffee or ice cream in one of the local cafes and restaurants.
Day 6 - Visiting the towns of St. Wolfgang, St. Gilligan and Bad Ischl
A full day of towns and lakes in the Tyrol region of Austria!
On the second day we started our way from Munich towards the Salzburg region where we traveled through the towns and lakes of Austria.
We visited these three beautiful towns of the area.
Apart from the towns themselves you can enjoy the amazing scenery around you.
The mountains that surround these towns and the lakes on whose shores they were built, give them a particularly magical atmosphere, and many times they are considered among the most beautiful towns in the world.

An amazing spa town, highly recommended after two days of climbing waterfalls and mountains :)
You can walk through its streets next to the Ishel River, visit the Kaiservilla and, of course, pamper yourself at the Eurothermen Resort spa, complete with hot pools, saunas, and of course - massages.

St Wolfgang
A town located on the shore of the beautiful Wolfgangsee Lake and at the foot of the Schafberg mountain.
The town is an excellent place to stay if you want a few days of sightseeing in the area because it is relatively easy to reach attractions and other beautiful places in the area.
Don't miss a visit to the Wolfgang Church (St. Wolfgang Kirche) or a cruise on the lake.

A cute little town located on the edge of the Wolfgang lake.
In the town you can enjoy a variety of cafes, restaurants and really, really cute houses..!
You can have fun wandering the streets of the old city and enjoy the buildings around you.

The lake area in general is very attractive for various other activities.
Although we only walked around it, you can absolutely take part in a variety of different water sports activities in the lake, or simply watch the sunset (or the sunrise if you are a morning person).

Day 7 - Salzburg and the Eagle's Nest (Kehlsteinhaus)
We started our last day in the Tyrol region by visiting the Eagle's Nest, known as Adolf Hitler's vacation home.
As part of our way towards the city of Salzburg, we stopped at the Eagle's Nest, which was built right on the edge of a mountain, the view from which is simply breathtaking.
We took a guided tour inside the Eagle's Nest where you can visit all the small rooms and corridors of the place.

After that we spent the remaining time wandering around the city of Salzburg, known of course as the hometown of the composer Mozart.
We had a bit of inclement and cold weather, but we still got to walk in the famous Mozartplatz, near which you can also find the Salzburg Cathedral (Dom zu Salzburg).
In addition, we visited Hohensalzburg Castle and Hellbrun Palace.

In fact, the city of Salzburg is full of various interesting attractions.
You can wander in its old city among the special buildings, or just visit one of the restaurants or cafes that the place has to offer.
At some point this is also what my mother and I chose to do. After a pretty intense week of travel, we chose to spend our last few hours in the area simply wandering aimlessly, and even doing some shopping :)
From Salzburg we returned back to the city of Munich, from which we took a flight back to Israel.

Last Words
Our 7 day itinerary we had in Tyrol region Austria was a great trip to do with my mother.
What's more, I can point out that if you are interested in traveling in this area, it might be better to start from the city of Salzburg and not necessarily from Munich.
Unfortunately, I no longer have the information about the hotels we stayed in, but I highly recommend checking different places to stay in this area of Austria, through Agoda (a subsidiary of Booking) that offers really attractive prices, or through Booking.com if you prefer :)
In addition, there is a lot of information about this area that would be very long and cumbersome to include in one post.
